Considered the most beautiful coins ever produced by the U.S. Mint, these coins feature the designs of Augustus Saint-Gaudens for both the obverse and the reverse. The obverse is a stunning full-frontal portrait of Lady Liberty as the sun’s rays shine behind her. In her left hand she holds high a torch, while in her right she carries an olive branch. The year is located next to her right foot. A rim of 46 stars, one for each state in the Union at the time, frames the portrait and the word “Liberty” is at the top. The reverse shows an eagle flying through the rays of the rising sun. The top of the coin proclaims “United States of America Twenty Dollars” above the eagle.
Commissioned by President Theodore Roosevelt, these coins were minted from 1907 until 1933 when President Franklin Roosevelt order production of gold circulation coins stopped. The $20 Saint-Gaudens Gold Double Eagles are the second version of the gold double eagle coins. The originals were designed by James Longacre and produced beginning in 1850. The design changed several times but the Saint-Gaudens is still considered the most beautiful of the designs.
